Pastor arrested for snatching cars at gunpoint

A district pastor of a church in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has been remanded by a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikeja.The 37-year-old pastor, Adebambo Adetunji, was alleged to be one of the gang members, who robbed motorists at the Ojota Bus stop, between April and July, 2014.

 Punch learnt that Adetunji and other suspects, who were still on the run, were notorious for snatching cars and robbing victims of their valuables at gun point.

Our correspondent gathered that a Toyota Camry and a Mercedes Benz ML320 , were diverted by the suspected robbers, who were said to have also used cutlasses in their operations.

It was learnt that Adetunji was arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad led by SP Abba Kyari after Badmus had reported the attack to the police.

The prosecutor, brought the suspect, before the Magistrate, Mrs. M.O. Oshodi, on three counts bordering on armed robbery.The charges read in part,

“That you, Adebambo Adetunji and others now at large, on April 30, 2014 at about 10.30pm at Ojota Bus stop in the Lagos Magisterial District while armed with guns and cutlasses did rob oneMercedes Benz Jeep ML320 with registration number LND 623 BF valued N1, 850,000, IPad valued N80,000, Blackberry Bold 5 valued N30,000, Nokia E5 valued N26,000 and cash sum of N250,000 total value N2,236,000 property of one Boniface Joseph.

“That you, and others now at large on July 6, 2014 at about 5.30pm at Ojota Bus stop in the aforementioned magisterial district did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; armed robbery.

“That you and others now at large on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district while armed with guns and cutlasses did rob one Toyota Camry 2008 model withregistration number MUS 413 BH valued N2.3m property of one Oluwatoyin Badmus.”

 Adetunji, who was clad in Ankara, burst into tears on hearing the charges.

Boko Haram Releases Some Abducted Women in Adamawa

There are reports that Boko Haram insurgents, who abducted about 60 women and girls from two border villages between Adamawa and Borno states have freed the women among their captives. 

This was disclosed in an interview by villagers, who spoke on the issue with newsmen on the telephone from their hide-outs. 

They however, said that the exact number of those released could not be ascertained, but that no fewer than 45 girls were still being detained. Vanguard reports that according to the villagers, the women and girls were abducted from Waga Mangoro which was between Gwoza in Borno and Madagali in Adamawa states.

 Relatives of some of the abducted women who were later released by the insurgents also, told newsmen in Yola that some of the girls have been turned to cooks while others were married off immediately to some of the insurgents. 

A relative to the one of the women who spoke on the condition of anonymity said; ”Initially, the insurgents captured 80 girls and women whom they later loaded into their vans and zoomed off into the bushes. 

Later in the night, the insurgents separated the elderly women from the girls and released the women, who are now languishing in the forest because they could not relocate the towns because they were razed down by the insurgents.

 “We are confused that hours after the so called cease fire agreement between the Federal Government and Boko Haram insurgents, our girls are still being abducted by the insurgents.

“We are at a loss about government’s insincerity on the whole issue and we urge them to rescue our daughters without further delay as we are ready to die searching for our missing ones

I don’t know how true this story is ,but according to  a report in Nigerian Tribune  a baby was born recently in Oyo state clutching a pocket-size Qur’an (pictured above).

The baby, who has since been named Ismail, was born in a church at the Oniyanrin area of Ibadan in September, the reports states. A renowned Islamic preacher who the newspaper spoke with said the woman who delivered the baby threw away the object she found in the baby's hand thinking it was something devilish, only for them to later find out it was a pocket-size Qur’an which contained all the 114 chapters in the holy book. It was wrapped in a thread. The preacher said although the Qur’an was small, the lettering inside was readable.

The child's parent who were not practicing any faith prior to the birth of Ismail, now say they will revert to Islam as this was a sign directly from Allah.

They also said since the news broke, their residence have become a mecca or sort as Ibadan people troop there to have a glimpse of the little boy.

Femi Falana Condemned Buhari for taking N27.5m loan to buy form

Lagos based lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN, has strongly condemned the former head of state and presidential aspirant, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for obtaining a loan of N27.5m to buy his party’s expression of interest and nomination form for the 2015 election.

Buhari is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Falana, who spoke on Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Paramount FM Chapel Press Week, noted that the action of the elder statesman was vulnerable, noting that it lead to monetization of politics.

He said, “It is indefensible for Gen. Buhari to have obtained a loan facility of N27.5m just to obtain a form of intent to contest in the presidential election in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress.

“Is he going to obtain another loan during his campaign, because in Nigeria, it costs billions of naira to run a presidential campaign?”

Falana, who was the guest lecturer at the event, spoke on the topic: ‘Current Security Challenges: Implication for 2015 Elections’.

The soft-spoken lawyer also advised journalists to be wary of fake politicians who would want to play to the gallery, but should focus on issues.

He said, “Journalists must show more than a passing interest on how those aspirants want to manage the economy. The government must address mass illiteracy, corruption and poverty.”

He also enjoined the government to wake up and fight the security challenges confronting the nation the same way the Ebola scourge was tackled.

“Government gave Ebola Virus Disease attention because it is no respecter of anybody. But government is not conscious of the security of the people because they have security guards protecting them”, he said.

The news went viral that on yesterday (Thursday) night some gunmen reportedly abducted Osio Agama, the younger sister to Nigeria’s Petroleum Minister,

Mike Jones warned the US President to avoid any contact with his girlfriend in Chicago.

 US President Barack Obama was reportedly embarrassed in public by a man while on a visit in Chicago on Monday.

"Mr President don't touch my girlfriend!" was heard in the crowd as Obama tried to drum up support and vote for incumbent governor, Pat Quinn, who is having difficulties seeking re-election.

Reports say a man later identified as Mike Jones, whose fiancee Aia Cooper was standing next to the president as he voted insisted the president avoids any contact with his woman.

According to a CNN report, President Obama replied: "I really wasn’t planning on it," later joking that Jones was "an example of a brother just embarrassing you for no reason."

Cooper however apologized on behalf of her boyfriend, telling President Obama that she knew her boyfriend would make a witty comment. "I can’t believe Mike, he is such a fool," She said.

President Obama still managed to get a hug and kiss from Cooper after voting despite her fiancé's rant.

But she reportedly told the President: "On the cheek, just the cheek — please, Michelle, don’t come after me — just the cheek!"

"Now, he's really jealous," Obama said to Cooper while looking for Jones in the crowd.

Ebola In New York Doctor tests positive

Dr Craig Spencer a 33 year old New York Doctor who recently returned from Ebola –hit Guinea in West Africa has tested positive to Ebola Virus

Dr Craig Spencer, treated Ebola patients while working for the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in the country. He left Guinea on 14 October, and returned to New York City on 17 October. But on Tuesday he began to feel tired and developed a fever and diarrhoea on Thursday.

Suspecting it could be the virus, he immediately contacted medical services and was taken to the city's Bellevue Hospital, where he is being kept in isolation

He is the first Ebola case diagnosed in New York, and the fourth in the US.

HERO: Kevin Vickers was given a standing ovation by MPs for the lives he saved during Ottawa shooting

Canadian Parliament hero Kevin Vickers struggled to keep his emotions together this afternoon as he was given a standing ovation by MPs.

The former Mountie was applauded by MPs of all parties one day after he shot and killed Muslim convert Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.

Mr Vickers was clearly overcome with emotion during the ovation, which took place during a special sitting of the parliament.

He appeared close to tears as he carried out his ceremonial duties.

As reported by Sky News, Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave a speech before he shook Mr Vickers hand. Politicians then stood again to applaud the national hero.

Mr Vickers has been hailed as a hero yesterday after he shot the gunman who had killed Corporal Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial.

Gunfire erupted close to where Prime Minister Harper was speaking.
