Photos Emerge Of Killer Nurse Doing The Unthinkable Next To Her Victims

In the sickening photos - taken by a colleague allegedly intimidated by Poggiali - the 42-year-old looks gleeful as she gives the camera a thumbs up in her nurses' scrubs, while standing over the hospital bed.In another picture, she apparently imitates a dead patient by lying next to her with her mouth open.Police were called after patient Rosa Calderoni, 78, was admitted to Umberto I hospital in Lugo, Italy, with a routine illness but died when she was injected with high levels of potassium.
Further investigations revealed that over a three month period, 38 out of 86 patients under the nurse's care had all died mysteriously. According to investigators, Poggiali had found the dead patients "annoying" or they had "pushy relatives."And they discovered snaps of her grinning alongside the dead bodies.Lead magistrate investigating the case, Alessandro Mancini, said: "We believe she is sound of mind, but simply took satisfaction, and real pleasure in killing.

"The photos reveal an unbearable cruelty that I have not seen in 30 years on the job."Now awaiting trial at a prison in Forli, a city in central Italy, Poggiali is being inundated with fan mail from admirers calling her "good looking. A prison spokesman said: "Over the last few weeks since she was placed here there has been a steady stream of letters from males."Most of them say how pretty and good looking they think she is, and one or two have even contained proposals of marriage."A spokesman from the hospital where she worked said: "She always came across as being a very cold person."But she also used her charms to flirt with male doctors if she thought she could get favours from them."
Poggiali has denied killing any patients and says she is being framed by jealous colleagues.

Bomb blast reported at Maiduguri Monday Market...30 killed

Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up today in a crowded market in Maiduguri, killing at least 30 people.According to Abba Aji Kalli, the Borno state coordinator of the Civilian Joint Task Force,  the two teenage girls dressed in full hijab entered the busy market and detonated their explosives. The first set off her explosives and killed about three women, said Kalli. When others gathered around the scene, the second bomber screamed and blew herself up, killing about 30, he said. "I am right here at the scene and I have before me 11 corpses ... many have been taken away by relatives, while others are taken to the state specialists' hospital," said Kalli. Soldiers and police officers cordoned off the area while rescue workers helped survivors to the hospital. Nigeria's Islamic extremist rebel group, Boko Haram, are suspected of the suicide blasts, as they have carried out many similar violent acts in northeastern Nigeria. Today's blast is the first in Maiduguri since July 2 when 56 people were killed in the same market area when a car bomb hit a group of traders and shoppers. Nigeria's police have not yet issued a statement on Tuesday's blasts.

Why this whisky costs $38,000 a bottle

Its contents have been watched over for the last half century by David Stewart, a highly respected whisky master for Scotland's Balvenie distillery. The cask was recently opened and bottled, and its contents are now available for purchase. A limited number of Balvenie Fifty bottles exist, and come with a suggested retail price of $38,000.
"It's spicy," said Stewart, as he swirled a taste of it in his glass and breathed it in. "There's ginger, nutmeg, dried fruits and dates."
His nose knows, and he's spent his life mostly smelling whisky rather than tasting it. Smell is a vital part of his job, and a large part of what makes him the malt master. He's only the fifth person to hold that job in Balvenie's 125-year history. "We last a long time in the company," he said.
The company is known for its handcrafted spirits. Part of what drives the price is the way the whisky is made, which hasn't changed much in the last century. The barley is still malted in-house, and Balvenie is only one of six distilleries with its own malting floor out of the 100 or so distilleries in Scotland.
That keeps the quality controlled, and means the distillery is only getting barley from the local farms around it, some of which have supplied the company for decades. That's not all that gives the Balvenie Fifty its eye-popping price tag. It's special  and expensive  because of its rarity, partly due to the fact that the yield from each cask isn't that high.
A cask usually yields about 400 bottles. The cask that held the Balvenie Fifty only yielded 131, and there are only 15 of the bottles available in the United States. The low yield is because over time, whisky in the cask evaporates. It can lose its alcohol content too, which isn't good -- a whisky has to have an alcohol content of at least 40% to be labeled Scotch whisky. At 45.4%, the 50-year-old just made it.
"We got lucky it stayed above strength," Stewart said. He spent the last decade keeping an extra eye on the alcohol content tests. "It's about patience. If anything, you're doing experiments."And while the experiments sometimes take place in the distillery's laboratory, Stewart prefers to keep it old school. "The nose always gets the final say," he said. Via cnn

#ThanksMichelleObama Criticizes First Lady Michelle Obama For School Lunches

A hashtag is currently circulating on Twitter that blames the First Lady for a gaggle of gross looking school lunches being served nationwide.
Students unhappy with school meals are taking it out on the first lady by sharing images on social media of lunches sarcastically tagged #ThanksMichelleObama.
Some of the images depict formless, mushy blobs on a lunch tray. Others show patties on whole-grain buns accompanied by an apple where one could imagine a pile of tater tots residing in earlier times.
The complaints focus on taste, texture and portion sizes under new nutrition regulations promoted by the first lady. The standards were implemented as part of Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative to reduce childhood obesity. They took effect in 2012 with the goal of including more whole grains, vegetables and fruits in school meals while reducing fat and sodium. But students say the changes make the food unpalatable.“I could understand how it might seem ungrateful if I got this lunch for free. But I don’t,” 17-year-old Hunter Whitney told CNN. “I feel like many people would be upset too if the lunch they bought looked [like this].”Backlash followed from others who said students were wrong to blame Michelle Obama for the quality of school meals.
Instead, they suggested that students direct their grievances at local school districts — or get their lunches from somewhere else.Via.CNN.com reports:

Dangote, Ezekwesili, 31 other Nigerians named among Most Influential Africans

This year’s listing of what has become one of the definitive listings of most influential Africans makes for an interesting read. It was a year that saw over 200 schoolgirls abducted overnight by the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram – an event Obiageli Ezekwesili was not going to let slip away quietly. Listed by New African for her influence in Civil Society and Activism, Mrs. Ezekwesili, one of the founders of Transparency International used her voice to speak up for those who could not, as she demand #BringbackOurGirls. Slowly but surly this message went viral and the world began to listen.
Another one who makes the list is Lupita Nyong’o, who set fashion blogs on fire and left film critics in awe, as she gracefully carried the beauty of Africa to the global stage. Celebrated by New African for winning an Oscar for her role in ’12 Years a Slave’, the academy award winning actress was also appointed ambassador for Lancôme cosmetics and named as Glamour’s woman of the year.
This year’s listing is not dominated by men with more than 40 women featuring in the list. South Africa and Nigeria dominate the listing with 33 and 27 entries respectively. There are four African heads of state. President Kenyatta, President al-Sisi of Egypt, President Déby of Chad and President Museveni of Uganda. All have featured prominently in 2014 with the latter two playing important roles mediating regional conflicts.
When people talk of African solutions to Africa’s problems, this was the year for the ‘Afri -Innovator’ Kelvin Doe. A self-taught engineer by the age of 13, Doe used scraps to build a generator to power a radio station to entertain audiences under the guise of DJ Focus. He has since signed a $100,000 deal to develop his own solar power technology, with a TED talk to add.
There are some names you would expect such as businessman Aliko Dangote and other heads such as Donald Kaberuka of the African Development Bank and Carlos Lopes of the Economic Commission for Africa. But there were also some new faces, emerging satirist Ikenna Azuike, who has just signed a show with the BBC, or Chester Missing, the puppet which makes so much noise in Southern Africa.
In essence, this was a roller coaster year across the continent and the Most Influential Africans of 2014 highlight the key themes, personalities and game changers of the year, for the celebrations and the controversy. A year in review, this edition of New African will also pay tribute to the late BBC Correspondent, Komla Dumor, and Female Genital Mutilation Campaigner, Efua Dorkenoo – African Icons, gone too soon.
