British actor Idris Elba can't
play James Bond because he's black, a US shock jock has claimed.
Elba - who achieved international fame in his role as
Russell 'Stringer' Bell in HBO hit The Wire - is the front runner to eventually
replace Daniel
Craig as 007.
But radio host Rush Limbaugh said on his show on Tuesday
that Elba should not be considered to play the famous secret agent, the Daily
Mail reports."James
Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and
Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was," Limbaugh said.
"But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond
should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland."
"That’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to
probably point this out."Limbaugh took his argument a step further, saying casting
Elba as Bond is like casting George Clooney as President Obama or or Kelsey
Grammer as Nelson Mandela.Limbaugh went on to compare the idea of casting Elba as 007
to Kate Hudson playing Michelle Obama and Scarlett Johansson as Condoleezza
Rice.He ended by saying "we're just playing here."Current Bond actor Craig has been spotted working on
'Spectre,' the next film in the long-running franchise.
