NYC: Police officer shot in the face while responding to call

                                                                  

        A Putnam County deputy sheriff was shot in the face this evening at 943 Crooked Creek Road, but his injuries are not life-threatening, according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

The call came in to PCSO at 7:48 p.m. from a woman who said her daughter was babysitting at that address and that a man was holding her against her will.

      Thaddeus Dennis and Barak Wood were the deputies who responded, according to Sills, and Wood was shot almost as soon as he got to the scene and stepped out of his patrol car.

Wood was taken to Putnam General Hospital where he was treated, Sills said; the weapon used was a shotgun, but Sills said he did not know if it contained pellets or birdshot.Sills said Donovan Ray Dann, 23, walked out of the woods and surrendered to Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massey and PCSO Capt. Anthony Frazier at 9:25 p.m.

       Sills said he had called Dann’s cellphone and sent him at least one text message, but he said he did not know if that had had an impact on Dann’s surrender.  Sills said a 2-year-old child who was in the trailer was taken into protective custody by deputies.Dann is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and “a bunch of other (charges),” Sill said; he is being processed at the Putnam County jail, according to the sheriff.You have to be some kinda crazy to shoot a police officer in the face!
