Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was the target of a
blackmail plot after a street bust-up was caught on CCTV and taken by a police
officer, a court heard today.
The ex-England star had been celebrating his Anfield
testimonial with pals at a bar near his home in Formby, Merseyside, when a
dispute with another group spilled outside in August last year.A court was told how cop Helen Jones flashed her warrant
card at a Lloyds Bank a few days later to obtain the footage. The trial also heard that Gerrard, 34, who acted as
peacemaker in the scuffle, began receiving demands from Paul Lloyd, who was
involved in the fracas. Jones, 33, from Kent, who worked for
Merseyside Police for eight years, was arrested for conspiracy to
commit blackmail.
The blackmail charge was dropped but she admitted
misconduct. She admitted taking the disc, saying she “acted out of
concern” for a person claiming to have been assaulted by a group that included
a “well-known individual”.She claimed: “I had been assured there was no intent to use
any evidence criminally.”A trial at Preston crown court into whether her conduct was
for “criminal
purposes” continues.Via mirror uk
