Alvin Stardust's wife Julie has opened up about the heartbreaking moment she had to say goodbye to her husband, speaking out about his illness just hours after he died.

The singer and actor died aged 72 on Thursday, and had planned to give a final interview to raise awareness of prostate cancer - which he had suffered from for 18 months.

But, just hours before, Alvin died surrounded by his family, and his wife gave the interview on his behalf, insisting it's what he wanted.

Julie revealed her husband's last moments to the Daily Mail, saying he whispered "I love you" to his family moments before.

"Go to your mum, my darling," she reportedly urged him. "She’s waiting for you. I need you to know you can go now and be at peace and that I love you and you don’t need to worry about us."
