At least people were killed Tuesday in what indigenes say is
a land dispute clash between Iregwe and Rukuba speaking nationals of Bassa
Local Government Area of northern Plateau state.
The state police command confirmed the incident in a
telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday.
Some witnesses said three, not two, persons died in the fatal clash.
The conflicting figures presented by witnesses and the
authority have become the trend in portrayal of casualty rate in Nigeria, with
witnesses presenting higher casualty figures.
“The information at our disposal is that two people died in
the incident, three others were injured, taken to hospital, treated and
discharged,” the police said.
The police spokesman, Abuh Emmanuel, also argued that the
clash was not a communal fight.
“It was reported to us that some unknown gunmen attacked the
community and killed 2 people. We not aware of the cause of the incident yet,
but investigations to that effect is on.
“The Police Commissioner has since dispatched a detachment
of anti-riot police to the area and has restored normalcy. But at the moment no
arrested has been made,” he said
