The FBI has arrested man for allegedly plotting an Islamic State-inspired attack
on the US capital Washington.
Federal authorities said Christopher Lee Cornell, also known
as Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, had planned to set off a series of bombs aimed at
those he allegedly considered enemies.He was arrested on 14th Jan on charges of attempting to kill a US
government official.According to FBI documents agents first noticed Cornell
after he took to Twitter to
show his support for violent jihadists.After monitoring his movements they discovered his intent to
launch an attack around Capitol Hill where the American Government sits using
deadly pipe bombs.
Agents said he had also planned to open fire on officials as
they fled the scene in panic. Cornell is said to be from the Cincinnati area.The FBI and Department of Homeland security issued a
bulletin to police forces across America notifying them of Cornell's arrest.It read: "The alleged activities of Cornell highlight
the continued interest of US-based violent extremists to support designated
foreign terrorist organizations overseas, such as ISIS, by committing terrorist
acts in the United States."Terrorist group members and supporters will almost
certainly continue to use social media platforms to disseminate English
language violent extremist messages.
