Anambra State Police Command has begun the withdrawal of
firearms from vigilance groups, ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, President of the Private
Security Proprietors of Nigeria, Chief Kenneth Okonkwo, said the action
followed a directive from the Inspector General of Police that firearms should
be withdrawn from vigilance groups.
He added that the action was welcome following the
indiscriminate use of firearms by untrained members of some vigilance groups in
the state. He said a committee had been set up and was currently
training vigilance members, issuance of uniforms, identity cards among others.
